Wellness – What Is It?..

Origins, Development, Global Spread, Essence & Benefits

Wellness & Health

Wellness is a concept that today plays a key role in all areas of life – from personal health to corporate well-being programs. But what exactly does this term mean, where does it come from, and why is it becoming so central in modern culture?

Origins and Roots

The word “wellness” comes from “well” and the suffix “-ness,” indicating a state of being. It first appeared in the English language in the 17th century, meaning “the state of being well.” However, the modern idea of wellness as a lifestyle began to take shape only in the 20th century.

Its roots are deeply connected to Eastern practices such as Ayurveda (India) and Traditional Chinese Medicine, which view the human being as a unity of body, mind, and spirit – striving not just to avoid illness, but to achieve balance and harmony.

Modern Wellness Origins

The foundation of modern wellness is linked to Dr. Halbert Dunn, an American physician who in the 1950s coined the term “high-level wellness.” In his 1961 book High-Level Wellness, Dunn described it as a conscious and active process of making choices toward a more successful and fulfilling existence.

In the 1970s, the movement grew in the U.S., and by the 1980s, wellness had evolved into a full-fledged industry – with seminars, wellness centers, and personal development programs.

Global Spread

With globalization and the rise of digital tools, wellness transcended borders and became a global trend. It reached Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Today, the term is international, with events like the Global Wellness Summit and industries such as wellness tourism, corporate wellness, and wellness architecture.

Technological advances also played a role – smart devices, fitness apps, meditation platforms, and personalized health systems became vital parts of the wellness lifestyle.

Essence of Wellness

Wellness is not just the absence of disease. It is an active and ongoing pursuit of a fulfilling, balanced, and healthy life.
